Roadway Worker Protection (Part 214, subparts A and C)
The purpose of 49 CFR Part 214 is to prevent injuries to roadway workers and to prevent damage to railroad equipment and property caused by on-track and off-track railroad equipment. Part 214 prescribes minimum safety standards for roadway workers and roadway maintenance machines. This course addresses only Part 214, subparts A and C. It does not address Part 214, subpart D for roadway maintenance machines. Each railroad and railroad contractor may prescribe additional or more stringent operating rules, safety rules, and other special instructions that are consistent with Part 214. The Roadway Worker Protection course must be completed annually by all roadway workers.

Alcohol & Drug Use (Part 219) For All Roadway Workers
The purpose of 49 CFR Part 219 is to prevent injuries to roadway workers and to prevent damage to railroad equipment and property caused by roadway workers impaired by alcohol or drugs. Part 219 prescribes minimum Federal safety standards for railroad employees’ and contractors’ use of alcohol and controlled substances. It does not restrict a railroad from adopting and enforcing additional or more stringent requirements consistent with Part 219. The course for all roadway workers must be accomplished in accordance with the requirements in Part 243 (every 3 years unless a shorter period is stipulated by the railroad) and is a prerequisite for the Part 219 training for supervisors.

Alcohol and Drug Use (Part 219) For Only Supervisors
49 CFR Part 219 mandates that employers of roadway workers provide specific training to supervisors of roadway workers to prevent injuries to roadway workers and to prevent damage to railroad equipment and property caused by roadway workers impaired by alcohol and controlled substances. The course for supervisors must be accomplished in accordance with the requirements in Part 243 (every 3 years unless a shorter period is stipulated by the railroad). The Part 219 training for all roadway workers is a prerequisite for the Part 219 training for supervisors.

Bridge Safety Standards (Parts 214 and 237)
49 CFR Part 237 mandates that most owners of railroad track that is supported by a bridge have a bridge management program. 49 CFR Part 243 mandates that employees responsible for implementation of a bridge management program must be trained in their respective duties in the program and in fall protection (Part 214, subpart B). The training for Part 237 must be accomplished in accordance with the requirements in Part 243 (every 3 years unless a shorter period is stipulated by the railroad). However, Part 214, subpart B that addresses fall protection training for roadway workers, must be accomplished annually. The Part 214, subparts A and C course is a prerequisite for the training required in Parts 214, subpart B and 237
